Beach safety

Enjoying the sands safely

Fleetwood sits at the southern point of Morecambe Bay. When the tide is out the water’s edge can be almost two miles away, and while the sands look flat they’re uneven with hidden gullies — the sea also comes in from all directions. This advice is kindly provided by Fleetwood Coastguard.

If you feel yourself sinking into soft sand

  1. Stop. Walk backwards onto the firmer sand behind you — don’t turn the chair until you’re on firm ground.
  2. Don’t panic — it won’t swallow you up; people float in soft sand and mud.
  3. Drop to your knees and shuffle backwards to spread your weight.
  4. If you sink a little more, sit or lie down and move slowly — you’ll stop sinking.
  5. The chair’s balloon tyres float, so it’s unlikely to sink far.
If in doubt at any stage, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard — tell them you’re on the beach at Fleetwood.

Understanding the tide

Fleetwood’s tides are among the biggest and fastest in the world, coming and going roughly twice a day. The water fills the gullies soon after low water and moves fastest around the middle of the incoming tide.
Our simple advice: be off the banks and back on the main beach no more than two hours after low water.
With thanks to Fleetwood Coastguard and the RNLI for keeping us all safe as we enjoy the beach.
